Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

“Train up a child in the way he should go….” is a verse most of us heard before our parents disciplined us.

We probably quote that verse to our children before disciplining them too.

That’s right.

But do you know that this verse is not limited to disciplining your children when they mess up?

Yes, training your child takes a lot of effort, and it is not something that parents should do once in a while.

Here are three things you should know about training a child in:

Train up a child is a Lifetime Process

You have been given the responsibility of training your child for the rest of their lives. Training is not a onetime thing or something you will do for a particular season.

It is your responsibility to mold and shape the character of your children.

But how do you do that?

You have to listen, talk to, cheer them on, reinforce good behavior and introduce new experiences to them. It would be best if you guide your children towards living righteously. But it will take you the rest of your life to train your child.

Not a Guarantee

We all know of parents who did their level best to bring up their children in a godly way, but their children did not end up living in the ways that their parents taught them.

That you are training your children in the ways of the Lord is not a guarantee that when they grow up, they will follow the path you laid out for them.

Frustrating, right?

But we shouldn’t let that fact get in the way. Instead, let us lean on God and pray for our children, not stray from what we teach them.

You have Influence and a Responsibility as a Parent

As children grow up, they mimic what their parents do so be careful of what you do in front of your children.

Children will talk the way you talk to them and other people. They will love the way you do, and they will act the way you do.

The best way to train up your child then is by allowing God through the Holy Spirit to take charge of your life and continue training you in the things of the Kingdom. The closer you are to God, the more you become transformed into the image of Christ, and this makes it easier for you to train your child in the things of God.

At the end of it all, you need to know that you will have results good or bad as a parent.

In conclusion:

It takes the grace of God for us to bring up children the right way. Remember, no one does it perfectly because we are also not perfect.

The years God has placed your children are under your care are critical because they are formative years. God has given you a great responsibility of taking care of the children he has given you. Lean on him, and he will show you how to take good care of your children.
